I'd really like to inquire what person finds themselves so unbelievably paranoid of hacks, so terribly supported by/distrustful of software, and so lazy that they'd not just shut a computer down, learn how to disable the ethernet, or unplug it that they could be convinced this is in any way worth it.

As a prank device, well now...

While he wouldn't fall for this, my brother would love for something like this to exist.

lol unplug it, but I could see the use that and for some reason you don't have wireless, and are on a wired connection, and also have other devices on your network too. Then realize you just infected that computer with some bad shit, that will make that computer send it out and infect your other computers. So the quicker you can break the connection the better, It would be just as easy to pull the cord but still lol.
Also most likely if you got something like this it's probably to late for the average person by the time they detect it and the other computer's are already infected.

another use quick way to pretend your internet dropped if you want to get out of a convo during a video chat and don't want to bee seen leaning over to pull the cord or heard clicking around to disable that connection.

I don't think it's a prank - it's for the tinfoil hat brigade.

Seems ridiculous, but perhaps not as much as one would think.

On devices that are semi-permanent mount, the ethernet ports may not be easily reached, and a switch could be useful for a manual disconnect.

More importantly, some routers get power over ethernet (PoE), and are mounted in more ideal radio locations, sometimes out of easy reach. A switch to cut power to re-boot a wireless access point or router via it's PoE would be an easy way to re-boot the device, without getting a ladder, or other hassle more than flipping a switch.

So maybe not so ridiculous after all, for specific reasons.

First: Parents with internet-using children would buy this. Especially if you wired in a timer to the cat5.

Second: My aunt would buy this as she unplugs the power to her cable modem every time she leaves the room.

If it wasn't for my parents bringing me up to not be a douchebag, I'd would've made a mint ages ago.

I get that, but he's selling this as a means to block all those pesky virus-writing Eastern Bloc weirdoes.

And those who know what you were just describing (I do, FWIW) would just make their own instead of heading to eBay.
